Good Coffee - No BitternessI bought a 5lb bag of the Poor Man's Blend - just made my first pot. I think this is a good, somewhat above average, coffee. Certainly worth the excellent price! It is not an exceptional cup, but I wouldn't expect that from any "blend".I drink a lot of coffee, at least one full 12 cup pot every day. I like it strong and I only drink it black, so no chance to cover up bad tastes. I find no bitterness or acidic taste to this coffee at all, and I even brewed this first pot a bit stronger than I usually do (based on the level of the beans in the grinder). The beans do not have a particularly strong or heady smell (somewhat disappointing), but they do have a fresh appearance, as opposed to some garbage brands that are bought several years old for pennies on the dollar.I am not a coffee connoisseur or "snob", but I certainly know what I like, and I offer the following information only to help any reader decide if my review might be meaningful to their specific tastes: First of all, I am frugal, probably even "cheap". I have found many excellent coffees over the years, but I just won't pay the usually stupid high prices to drink them every day., so I am always on the lookout for a new find at an excellent price. Coffees I generally find excellent include Blue Mountain, Jamaican, Ethiopian, and Honduran. I am not a particular fan of Kona beans, but most anything from Kauai is excellent. I prefer a dark roast, but I absolutely DETEST anything sold by Starjokes, and I will not drink that garbage even if it is free. Burnt dirt is NOT an acceptable flavor. No "flavored" coffee is ever acceptable - even the smell of them makes me gag.4Good coffee, decently pricedI decided to try this coffee on a whim. Did the name attract me? Yes it did. The price was even more attractive as it's for 5 lbs of beans, considering that I was paying $18 for a 2 lb bag at the local grocery store. I am pleasantly surprised with the aroma while grinding and brewing. The flavor is good, it's a nice medium roast coffee blend. If you just want to enjoy a decent cup of coffee, and you don't want to stand in line behind coffee snobs for a cup of coffee in the morning, buy this and get your morning started at home. It stands up well to milk, half and half, cream, and flavored creamers, and it tastes fine with none as well. This is going on my Christmas list as gifts for coffee loving family and friends.5It was not a bad batch it really is bad coffee. Really terrible OK So I don't know how to rate this so I am rating just the last bag I bought. I've purchased it many times and liked it more than more expensive coffee. This last bag is so terrible I cannot wait to get rid of it all. I am not even mixing it with better coffee like I normally would to get rid of sub par coffee because I'm sure it will contaminate that coffee too. This bag is so rough and woody/sandy tasting I have to make it weak just to gag it down. I will not be giving it another shot so I'll never know if it was just one bad bag or if it is all going to be this terrible. AND THE WORST PART is that I cannot even complain to friends because when they hear the name they say "well what did you expect?"OK so I bought a batch of Eyes Wide Open and it is just as bad as the other kind. I give up no more of this terrible coffee 1Every coffee connoisseur should get one of these jumbo packsWow! I was not expecting much from this, but this is awesome! I was skeptical for a few reasons. First, it's a blend, and usually blends are a way for brewers to get rid of their old beans and mark them up like they're a premium product. Second, this is the most economical whole bean that I've ever seen anywhere. On a per pound basis, it's really only half of what you can get anywhere else. Third, I'd never heard of Coffee Bean Direct before. Well, this blew away my expectations. It's one of the tastier coffees that I've ever tasted. Granted, it's not the best coffee ever, but in the class of economy coffees, this one blows away all the other coffees in its class. These beans last for a long time, too. I repack mine into smaller Ziploc's, because five pounds is a lot of beans. We usually take about three months to drink 5 lbs of coffee, so this is the perfect size for us. Oh, the other reason to get this is if you get 1 lb bags at the store, a lot of times, they're only 10 or 12 ounces. So, if you're trying to get a good deal on coffee, then you should definitely try this, because it's a full 5 lbs.I also picked this because it's a medium roast. I started roasting my own beans a couple years ago, and I learned that unlike rum, the lighter the roast is generally better. The other thing that really surprised me was that beans taste way better about a month after they're roasted. Grinding is a different deal, though. In my opinion, the best coffee comes from freshly ground beans that were roasted 1-3 months ago. And, my shipment of beans were roasted about 1 month before I got them. There's quick turnaround on these, since they're such a hot item right now, so you can probably expect your beans to be just as fresh as mine were.Overall, you really should get this, especially if you're someone who values the best mix of quality and quantity.5Best coffee everThis is the second bag I've bought, and I couldn't be more pleased. I was getting the dark roast Colombian, but thought I'd try this "Poor Man's Blend" and discovered I like it even better! Coffee Bean Direct is the best.[Edit, 10-03-17: I got the ground coffee last time and it's ok, but I'm very glad to get the whole bean again.5I wanted to like this coffee I wanted to like this coffee. I needed something to wake me up, as my usual Sprouts brand coffee just wasn't cutting it. This is very acidy. For me, too much acid makes my stomach hurt and makes me nauseous. It also doesn't taste good. It definitely wakes me up--but I can only handle a few sips before feeling sick. I end up leaving my cup mostly full. Unfortunately, I will not be buying this again. 1TastyThe Kona Coffee brand name is highly protected by the state of Hawaii, establishing several grades and packaging requirements. A pound of 100% Kona Coffee will cost $40 or more. Outside the state of Hawaii, packaging has no such requirements to conform to. So who do you trust? Did CBD actually use Kona Coffee Beans? The packaging doesn't even say 10% Kona Beans which is the minimum requirement to classify it as a Kona blend. Well, this coffee smells nice, grinds well, is highly aromatic while brewing, and is smooth and tasty enough for my morning 32 ounce cup of coffee that I drink black with nothing added. For that, it is probably worth paying the price over what is currently made available in the major grocery stores these days.5Very sad that I was left with 5 lbs of this ... this is just about the weakest coffee I have ever purchased. Very sad that I was left with 5 lbs of this stuff that basically produced the effect of hot water and brown crayons. 1Great Non-Acidic Drug for Brain Fog and Low Motivation at High Enough DosesI ordered light roast and I got light roast! Haha.I used to drink Bustelo Espresso coffee that was preground-ed? I thought all coffee was gross, acidic, and disgusting until I tried this. Now, I'm only after the caffeine, not the ritual or "flavor." So in 5 minutes I drink one cup with miminum 8 tablespoons of grounds for a therapeutic dose. I no longer take ADD meds due to the stigma around them. This here also helps with memory and fogginess... When taken in higher doses. Caffeine is a CNS drug, the same as other illegal stimulant drugs. But people are dumb. If they grew up in a world with unregulated MiTH, they would think nothing of it. That's the deal with caffeine.I've never been the type to drink one tiny cup of coffee to "wake up." With ADD I feel like I'm always asleep due to brain fog and non existant motivation. 2 Monster cans back to back hardly do anything. This coffee is very easy to drink at higher doses. Most importantly, it's more potent than dark coffee and doesn't have such a strong taste due to being a light roast. At 5 tablespoons and up, dark coffee is absolutely disgusting even with so much sugar and milk.5Yukky Yuk i guess once you go italian roast expresso you cant go back, the eyes wide open was anything but and has a taste of kinda like a mohca instant....mixing it in just to get rid of it 1Debated after reading reviews and decided I should decide for ... Debated after reading reviews and decided I should decide for myself. I will not reorder, coffee was very weak and if we doubled up on the amount it was bitter. My husband who usually never comments on the coffee said the beans looked very dry and old when he grind them. 13 bad bags in a row, means I'm done... I've been a Coffee Bean Direct (CBD) fan for a few years, but they just lost a long time customer. The last 3 bags of coffee I've received have been trash, 2 Colombian Supremo and one Kona blend. The coffee tastes like nothing, I couldn't even get it to run through my Bunn without grinding on the biggest grind. It ends up with a slew of chaff and bland coffee.I've received bags of coffee that had a bad roast and you power through it or never go back to the brand. I've never had this from CBD though. So I was much dismayed after 3 bags of the same.I even contacted CBD directly, the worst part was they offered me $5 off a $50 bag of coffee if I bought from them directly! I just spent $150 on 3 bags of horrid coffee, i've been a customer of theirs spending about $50/month on their coffee for over 3 years...and their response is spend another $50 and we will give you $5 off? Haha...yeah it was a good run. I'm out.I cannot support a company with no customer service. 1Bad coffee Terrible coffee. I enjoyed several varieties but the eyes wide open blend and this krona blend were just bad. Dull, dry beans with no oil that turn to dust when ground. Avoid this one! 1Excellent coffee, excellent valueWhat a pleasant surprise. Seemed like it might be a bit of a risk buying 5 pounds sight unseen. I'm glad I did.Received the package tonight and made a pot. Nice mild taste with a clean finish. It's not too strong but it's by no means weak either. I prefer to drink my coffee with no cream or sugar, and this stuff works well in that scenario. Good coffee shouldn't need additives to hide it's shortcomings. I will buy this again. Please also note that this stuff is cheap $6.15 per pound (@ $30.77 per 5 lb bag). If it's not as good as your previous FuFu $20 per lb."Look How Much I Spent" Gourmet blend, well, get over it. For the money there is absolutely nothing to complain about.5One Star Terrible flavor. Very disappointing. Wasted our money! Going back to Italian Roast. 1Deserve a Nobel Prize for benefitting societyFor providing great coffee at a great price. I'm starting a business and have little extra cash. I work 70+ hours a week, and like to stay well caffeinated. This coffee tastes great, and I can afford to have this really good coffee and drink as much of it as I want. $5-6 a pound, and the Starbucks is $10 for 14 oz?No way. Not for me. I've made some sales, and can't wait to try some of their more high falutin offerings.Keep it up!!The YD5Not what I hoped for While not the worst I've tasted, and certainly not the most expensive, I didn't find this to be worth the price compared to others available at around the same price. This blend appears to be a combination of beans remaining from other roasts that are then combined to make this blend - of which I love the concept. I manually brew, so I tried different grinds, different water temperatures, and even different amounts of grounds, and I really couldn't find a way to enjoy this coffee. I may try another one of their blends or coffee, but I will never try this blend again or recommend it to anyone. I have experience with their teas, and have been very satisfied. 1it's called the poor man's blend and happened to be the cheapest thing ...I have a conical burr grinder and I store my coffee in a coffee vault/freezer.I didn't have high expectations of this but I assumed it would be a somewhat passable bean. I mean, it's called the poor man's blend and happened to be the cheapest thing on Amazon for whole bean coffee but at least for me, the acidity from the hot brewed coffee makes this unusable for me. Fortunately, my wife prefers her coffee cold brew and a fine grind with a cold brew really salvages some flavor and caffeine.2 grind and brew types:Grind:Very fineBrew: Cold brewed in a fridge for 12hrsFlavor: light berry flavor. slightly acidicGrind:course grind through a conical burrBrew: French press with hot water for 3.5 to 5 minutesFlavor: The acidity was overpowering to the point where I just couldn't drink more than a few sips.2I've found my coffee!Wonderful product. My Aunt loves that I introduced her to this coffee. She swears it measures up to the best coffee house coffees out there. The whole house smells wonderful when I brew a pot. The Caffeine? What can I say other than WOW (yes and it would be a good combination with the other WoW "World of Warcraft" if your going to experience a marathon of a game) They roast this coffee specifically to allow the oils and caffeine to enrich your coffee experience. Add to that the relatively low price for 5 lbs that you can practically smell through the box when it arrives and the visible oil on the beans and you've definitely found a winner. Some complained that the taste wasn't to their liking, if ground and brewed correctly this shouldn't be a issue, I have yet to have a acidy cup but perhaps I am just not a "coffee snob". Perhaps they just want that "burnt just this side of hell" taste popular among the "popular" coffee houses. This is a light roast coffee though, expressly made to bring out the oils and caffeine that make a good cup of coffee taste rich and full. They might want to stick with their Extra Dark Roasts if they want that burnt flavor or just go to their "popular" coffee houses and pay the exorbitant price per pound to get that flavor they so much desire.I for my part have found this wonderfully roasted, flavorful and well caffeinated coffee. Oh and a permanent coffee filter will help from the paper filters absorbing those wonderful oils and are more earth friendly as well.5
